Principal Engineer

SUMMARY:  Manages and/or applies extensive technical expertise in the coordination of multiple, complex, non-routine projects involving the planning, design, reconfiguration, construction, maintenance and alteration of systems facilities or processes. Employs an extensive technical knowledge of more than one area of engineering (process, unit operations, and equipment project) in complex process characterization, optimization, scale-up, or manufacturing support projects.

FUNCTIONS:  1. Establish engineering policies for a major segment of the company. 2. Interpret, execute, and recommend modifications to company-wide policies. 3. Develop organizational budgets or project budgets encompassing all disciplines for large or complex project. 4. Apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts in the development of new principles and concepts. 5. Perform work that involves in-depth investigation of subject area, definition of scope, selection of areas of investigation, and development of novel concept. 6. Conceive plans and conduct engineering research/investigation in areas of considerable scope and complexity. 7. Plan, organize and coordinate work of a staff of engineers and/or technicians. 8. Lead efforts with research, manufacturing, process development, utilities, facilities, quality assurance and validation departments in developing requirements and recommendations for large and/or highly complex system/facility or process modifications. 9. Established a corporate Engineering resource, specializing in more than one area of engineering.10. Designs, executes, implements and directs engineering or process projects which significantly contribute to attaining high priority goals.

EDUCATION:  Doctorate degree and 2 years of Engineering experience OR Master's degree and 6 years of Engineering experience OR Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 8 years of directly related experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Working knowledge of pharmaceutical/biotech processes Familiarity with validation processes Familiarity with documentation in a highly regulated environment Ability to operate specialized laboratory equipment and computers as appropriate. Ability to interpret and apply GLPs and GMPs. Ability to apply engineering science to production. Able to develop solutions to routine technical problems of limited scope Demonstrated skills in the following areas Problem solving and applied engineering. Basic technical report writing Verbal communication Comprehensive understanding of validation protocol execution requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Demonstrated Skills in the following areas:  Basic technical presentations Personal Organization Validation Protocol Writing Dealing with and managing change Technical (Equipment Specific)o Analytical Problem Solving Computer Literacy Specialized equipment/process expertise In-depth knowledge of validation processes and requirements as applied to new equipment installations Interacts effectively with variety of communication and working styles Ability to independently determine when additional internal resources are required to solve problems? Ability to handle multiple projects at one time Demonstrated Skills in the following areas: Schedule development. Facilitation Collaboration o Basic project management Completion and follow-up Established expertise in at least 3 separate areas of engineering technology. Ability to independently determine when additional external resources are required to solve problems. Ability to provide solutions to a large variety of technical problems of moderate to large complexity and scope Problem solving skills requiring the application of scientific and engineering theory and calculations and creative skills in the development of hypotheses and approach.  Working knowledge of financial analysis tools Ability to delegate and manage the project work of others. Demonstrated Skills in the following areas: Negotiation, persuasion and facilitation Collaboration Project cost development Conflict Resolution Leadership and teambuilding. Management of contractors and vendors Knowledge of theories and principles related to leading edge technologies. Advanced (industry level) technical expert in at least one specialty area. Ability to motivate and communicate visions/missions Established expertise in several areas of engineering & technology. In-depth knowledge of validation processes and requirements as applied to grassroots facility construction, commissioning and startup Demonstrated Skills in the following areas: Advanced project management Presentations to large groups External networking. Personnel coaching and development.
